Now, what IS a noun?

Basically, a noun is a word which names an object, a place, a person, a thing.

Practice:
Identify the nouns in these sentences:
[1] The bull slept beside the river.     [Answer]
[2] The small boy had a huge headache.     [Answer]



OTHER TYPES OF NOUNS:

PROPER NOUNS:
Nouns which are real names are called Proper nouns.

Proper nouns usually refer to a specific, named person or thing.

Proper nouns usually begin with a CAPITAL LETTER!

As an example, "dog" is not a proper noun, it is a noun.

But in this sentence: "My dog, Spot, likes marshmallows", Spot is a proper noun because it is the specific name of a thing - a dog!

Practice:
Identify the proper nouns in these sentences:
[1] The bull slept beside the Whanganui River.     [Answer]
[2] My brother, Peter, swam five lengths of the school pool.     [Answer]


PRONOUNS:
Words which are used instead of a NOUN are called Pronouns.

There are many types of pronouns but let's keep it simple. Words like: I, you, my, myself, mine, yours, yourself, theirs, them, his, her, and so on are all pronouns.

Identify the pronouns in these sentences:
[1] Gemma said we should go to her place to play    [Answer]
[2] Fifi the cat licked herself clean.    [Answer]
