EXTENSION AND ENRICHMENT TASKS - Developing a variety of skills and enriching our reading experience
The value of each task is listed at the end of each task description in squared brackets eg. [ ] - The tasks you choose to complete must total at least thirty (30) marks.
1)Choose a story or article. Check with your teacher first to see if it is a suitable choice. Give a summary of your story or article in one paragraph. [5 marks]
2)Read a poem/rhyme/chant from your journal to the class. You should think about an interesting way to present your choice and make sure you've rehearsed it properly. You may do this as a pair activity. [5 mks]
3)Find someone in the journal you think does something interesting. In your book, say why you think what they do is interesting. [5 marks]
4)Create a collage about a theme from an article by cutting out appropriate pictures from other sources and gluing them on a sheet of paper, ready for display on the wall. Include the theme's title on your collage and be prepared to talk about it to the class. [5 marks]
5)Write your own captions for any 5 photos in your journals. Be creative! [5 marks]
6)Research, prepare and give a one minute speech to the class about a topic mentioned in an article. [5 marks]
7) Make four (4) Flippaz cards containing facts from your article (you can refer to other articles from your journal if you struggle to get enough facts from the article you have been using for these questions. You cannot use facts already used for task number 14 below!). [5 mks]
8) Make two (2) Panel FLIPboards from A4-sized card containing facts from your article (you can refer to other articles from your journal if you struggle to get enough facts from the article you have been using for these questions. You cannot use facts already used for task number 13 above!). [5 mks]
9)Make a diorama based on an article or story. [10 marks]
10)Draw a comic strip based on a story or article. (You may do this using an app or software on a device.) [10 marks]
11)Write a poem of your own based on a poem, article or story from one of your journals. Publish it for display in the class - or glue it in your book, if you prefer. Then be prepared to present it to the class in an imaginative way. [10 marks]
12)Design a board game or a card game based on an article. [10 marks]
13)Transform the information from an article into another form, eg. diary, poem, short story, instructions, recipe, etc. Publish your work for display in the classroom. Be prepared to share it with the class. [10 marks]
14)Follow the instructions and make something (or a few things) which is described in your journal. Check with your teacher first and explain what you want to do. If it is suitable, fine. [10 marks]
15)COLLABORATE: Select, rehearse and present a play from one of your journals. The group will receive the same mark each. The class will vote for 50% of your score. Your teacher will award you the other 50% of your score. [10 marks]
16)Retell one of the stories to the class. Rehearse it well. You must actually "tell" the story like a real "story-teller", using good expression of voice and face, and use gestures where necessary. [10 marks]
