INSTRUCTIONS: You must do at least two (2) problems from each module.
Each question is worth either 1, 2 or 3 credits - .
You must score at least 10 credits to complete your contract. You can do more problems to get more credits, of course.


MODULE ONE
(1) Make 24  CREDIT

Use division, multiplication, addition and subtraction to make each set of numbers into equations which will equal 24. You may use brackets, also.

(2) Letters, Numbers... Confusion!  CREDIT

Look at the equations below. Each letter represents a different digit. Can you figure out which digit each letter represents?  [Help]

(4) TERRARIUM   CREDIT

Suzie had a large terrarium which contained some spiders, crickets, and some frogs. One day, bored, Suzie counted 72 legs, but only 12 heads! If there were as many crickets as frogs and spiders combined, how many of each creature were there?

(5) CARD COLLECTION   CREDIT

Jen and Todd collect rugby cards. In total, they have 207. If Jen has twice as many as Todd, how many more cards does she have?

(6) COLOUR 'EM   CREDIT

Abel saw four interesting things in the paddock one day. He saw some flowers, a dog, a cat, and some cows. Read the clues and say what colour each thing was:
The dog wasn't black or white. The cows weren't brown or grey. The cat was a lighter colour than the cows or dog. White was not the colour of the cat. The flowers were of a lighter colour than the cows.




MODULE TWO
(7) DOTTY SQUARE   CREDIT

DOM PUZZLE Cut out the shapes on the left and use them to form a square. You must make sure each row, column and diagonal have the same number of dots.

Your teacher has copies of larger shapes for you to use.

(9) WHEELIES!  CREDITS

Construct a wheel out of cardboard which, when rolled along a flat surface, will rotate JUST a little more (no more than a quarter turn!) than three (3) times within 1.15 metres.
(10) Pentomino Puzzler!!   CREDIT

Draw two 5 x 5 grids. Next, show how you could perfectly arrange 5 different pentominoes inside these grids.  Your solutions must be different, of course!



MODULE THREE
(11)   Problem Solving Galleria.  Below are 10 problems. Show your working to have your answers considered completed.
  • (Problem 11.1)     Stan is giving away a total of 35 marbles to his brother, Gordon, and his sister, May.
    If he gave Gordon and May the marbles at a ratio of 3:4, respectively, how many marbles did each person receive?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.2)     A bucket with a capacity of 2.65 litres is filled with water and emptied into a 100 litre tank 32 times.
    [a] How much water is now in the tank if it was empty to begin with?
    [b] How much is still needed to completely fill the tank?

  • (Problem 11.3)     I bought 9 comics for $24.75. How much would 13 comics cost?

  • (Problem 11.4)      Dorothy and Dianne made a square pyramid during maths. Each side of the base measured 6cm. The height of each triangle was 9cm.
    What is the total surface area of the entire pyramid?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.5)     A cuboid measures 11.5cm x 4.5cm x 12.5cm. What is the weight of this cuboid if the material it is made of weighs 7.5 grams/cubic centimetre? Give your answer in kilograms.

  • (Problem 11.6)     Twelve people attend a meeting and each person shakes hands with everyone else once only. How many handshakes were there in total?

  • (Problem 11.7)     Jiro earns a weekly wage of $960.75. His brother, Jun, earns 15% less per week than Jiro. How much less than Jiro does Jun earn in a year?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.8)     Trent makes a paper box which is 3cm high, 9cm long and which has a volume of 324cm3. What was the width of this box?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.9)     Taylor makes a paper box which is 5cm high, 9cm long and which has a volume of 1125cm3. What was the width of this box?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.10)     Mr Pollis is pushing a wheelbarrow from her garden to the rubbish bin. The tyre of the wheelbarrow has a radius of 8cm. If the distance from the garden to the rubbish bin is 30 metres, how many times will the wheel rotate completely during this journey?  [Help]
