Each question is worth either 1, 2 or 3 credits - .
You must score at least 10 credits to complete your contract. You can do more problems to get more credits, of course.


MODULE ONE
(1) FENCE MAKING  CREDIT

Bridget is making a fence which is 20m long. She will put up a post every 2 metres. How many posts will she need?

(2) ONE HUNDRED  CREDIT

[A] Use five 1s to make an equation which equals 100.
[B] Find TWO (2) ways to use five 5s to show 100.

(3) PLUS THEM!   CREDIT

a) Combine PLUS signs and five 2s to get 28.

b) Combine PLUS signs and eight 8s to get 1, 000

(4) SWIM-A-THON   CREDITS

In a school swim-a-thon, the pupils of Room 76 swam an average of 96m each.
[a] If there are 29 pupils in Room 76, what was the total distance swum?
[b] If the pupils were sponsored 20 cents per metre, how much did they raise?

(5) SNOOKER PURCHASE   CREDIT

Peter bought a new snooker cue stick and chalk for a total of $51. If the cue stick cost $50 more than the chalk cube, what was the price of each?

(6) MULTIPLICATION DIGITS   CREDIT

Complete each problem below so that they are correct and so that each problem uses the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 once only.

(9) BOX IT!  CREDITS

Construct a paper box for my compass set. The compass set's box measures 98mm x 25mm x 181mm. Your box does not need a lid, but the compass set box should fit snugly, and your box should have sharp, straight edges.
(10) GRID PLOTTING   CREDITS

Draw up your own 7 x 7 grid, or use some other grid. Label the axes from 0 - 7. Next, connect these co-ordinates to draw a shape: (3, 0), (3, 2), (1, 4), (1, 7), (2, 6), (3, 7), (4, 6), (5, 7), (5, 4), (3, 2)

(11)   Problem Solving Galleria.  Below are 10 problems. Show your working to have your answers considered completed.
  • (Problem 11.1)     On a map, 1mm represents a distance of 20km. What is the distance, in kilometres, represented by 2.35cm?

  • (Problem 11.2)      Blake and Cally get a telephone bill for $345.45. If it is paid by the end of the month, there is a 10% discount. How much is the reduced bill?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.3)     In a pet shop, there are 36 animals with a total of 100 legs. The animals are either birds or mammals. How many of each are there?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.4)      A household detergent is mixed at the rate of 30ml per 600ml of water. How much detergent is needed for 9 litres of water?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.5)     How many 5ml spoonfuls can be taken from a 0.12 litre bottle of cough mixture?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.6)     In the TV show, BLACK ADDER, the star, Rowan Atkinson, received an average of $80, 000 per episode. The show ran for 4 seasons. 6 shows were made per season, plus one Christmas special was made for which Rowan received 40% more than usual for an episode. How much did Atkinson receive in total?

  • (Problem 11.7)     A roll of dog sausage was shared between 12 cats so that each cat received 95g of food. If the same amount of food had to be shared between 3 cats, how much would each cat receive?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.8)     An ant starts to walk around the edges of a cube has sides measuring 10mm. If it doesn't retrace its steps, how far can it travel at most? Give your answer in centimetres.   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.9)     A petrol tank is half full when it holds 36 litres. How much more petrol is needed to make it two thirds full?

  • (Problem 11.10)     A room measures 15m x 10.5m. Carpeting costs $16.50/m2 and the underlay costs $5.75/m2. A carpet layer charges $32.00/hour and the job will take 4-and-a-half hours.
    How much will it cost to carpet the room?
