INSTRUCTIONS: You must do at least two (2) problems from each module.
Each question is worth either 1, 2 or 3 credits - .
You must score at least 10 credits to complete your contract. You can do more problems to get more credits, of course.


MODULE ONE
(1) FENCE MAKING  CREDIT

Bridget is making a fence which is 50m long. She aims to put up a post every 3 metres. How many posts will she need?  [Help]

(2) NUMBING NUMBERS  CREDITS

[A] Use four 5s to make an equation which equals six-and-a-half (6 1/2).
[B] Using just 3 (three) digits, write out an addition sum which totals 24. The digits MUST be the SAME - but they can't be 8!
[C] Use 6 (six) 9s to write the number 100!

(3) THE HUNGRY CAT   CREDITS

My cat, Butch, is surrounded by 13 mice, 12 grey and one brown, who make a circle around him. I tell Butch to eat each thirteenth mouse, going in one direction only around the circle. But the last mouse must be the brown one.
Which mouse should he eat first?  [Help]

(4) SWIM-A-THON   CREDITS

In a school swim-a-thon, the pupils of Room 706 swam an average of 88m each.
[a] If there are 31 pupils in Room 706, what was the total distance swum?
[b] If the pupils were sponsored 25 cents per metre, how much did they raise?

(5) PURCHASING POWER   CREDIT

Mary bought a bucket and spade to use at the beach. Both items totalled a cost of $6.00. If the price of the spade was a quarter the cost of the bucket, how much did each item cost?

(6) SQUARE MAGIC   CREDIT

[a] Make your own 4 x 4 magic square. It MUST contain the number 80. [b] Make your own 5 x 5 magic square. It MUST contain the number 52.


MODULE TWO
(7) GRAPHIC CONSTRUCT   CREDIT

The Maverix Soccer team scored a total of 36 goals during 2000. Below is a list of most of the goal scorers and the number of goals they scored. Two people have not been listed with the number of goals they scored. You must work out how many each player scored. The clue is that Felice scored twice as many goals as Brock.

Draw a histogram on grid paper to show the following information:
Number of goals scored by members of the Maverix Soccer Team in 2000:
Terry = 3, Tony = 9, Bernadette = 2, Rochelle = 4,
David = 7, Luigi = 5, Felice = ?, Brock = ?  [Help]

Draw the grid below and draw in the counters as shown. Remove six (6) counters - BUT leave an even number of counters in each row and each column.

(9) BOX IT!  CREDITS

Construct a cardboard box which will hold exactly 512ml of sand. Your box does not need a lid, but the sand should be contained almost perfectly, and your box should have sharp, straight edges.

Construct a pie graph to represent the below information about the colour of people's eyes in Tom's choir group:

(11)   Problem Solving Galleria.  Below are 10 problems. Show your working to have your answers considered completed.
  • (Problem 11.1)     On a map, 1mm represents a distance of 20km. What is the distance, in centimetres, which would show 640 km?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.2)      Blake and Cally get a telephone bill for $322.85. If it is paid by the end of the month, there is a 15% discount. How much is the reduced bill?

  • (Problem 11.3)     In a pet shop, there are 30 animals with a total of 90 legs. The animals are either birds or 4-legged mammals. How many of each are there if there are the same number of birds as there are mammals?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.4)      A household detergent is mixed at the rate of 80ml per 240ml of water. How much detergent is needed for 12 litres of water?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.5)     How many 20ml spoonfuls can be taken from a 0.85 litre bottle of cough mixture?

  • (Problem 11.6)     In the TV show, FAWLTY TOWERS, the star, John Cleese, received an average of $10, 000 per episode during the first season. The show ran for 2 seasons. 12 shows were made per season. During the second season, Cleese earned an extra 65% per episode than he did the season one. How much did Cleese receive in total?

  • (Problem 11.7)     A roll of dog sausage was shared between 9 cats so that each cat received 125g of food. If the same amount of food had to be shared between 3 cats, how much would each cat receive?  [Help]

  • (Problem 11.8)     An ant starts to walk around the edges of a square pyramid which has a base measuring 40mm per side. The length of each edge of the triangles which make the sides of the pyramid is 80mm. If it doesn't retrace its steps, how far can it travel at most?   • (Problem 11.9)     A petrol tank is half full when it holds 75 litres. How much more petrol is needed to make it three fifths full?   [Help]

  • (Problem 11.10)     A room measures 17m x 8.75m. Carpeting costs $20.50/m2 and the underlay costs $5.75/m2. A carpet layer charges $45.00/hour and the job will take 4-and-a-half hours.
    How much will it cost to carpet the room?
