VOCABULARY - Developing your language/word skills

Select a story or article from any NZ School Journal of your choice. You will answer all the VOCABULARY section questions below based on your choice. Check with your teacher first to make sure your choice is suitable. Write the title of your story or article in your books.

 1) Alliteration. Write an example of alliteration relating to your chosen text. Reference the page on which your example is located. [1 mk]  

 2) Onomatopoeia: Write an example of onomatopoeia relating to your chosen text. Reference the page on which your example is located. [1 mk]  

 3) Hyperbole: Write an example of hyperbole relating to your chosen text. Reference the page on which your example is located. [1 mk]  

 4) Simile: Write a simile relating to your chosen text. Reference the page on which your example is located. [1 mk]  

 5) Metaphor: Write a metaphor relating to your chosen text. Reference the page on which your example is located. [1 mk]  

 6) Write a haiku related to your chosen text. Each line MUST contain at least one adjective which you must underline. [3 mks]

 8) Get a photocopy of an article in your journal. Number every single paragraph. This will help you do the next task. (This could be done on your computer using a scan/photo of your article pages.) [2 mks]  
 9) In your book, write an index for your article. Include 9 items with paragraph references. You will need to draft this first. Your teacher will help you start this task. [3 mks]  

 10) Think of a different title for your article. Give reasons for your choice. [2 mks]  

 11) From the school library, find at least three different resources which deal with the same topic as your article. Show your teacher when you have found them and be ready to prove your choices are actually about the same topic. [3 mks]  



 12a) SELECT A STORY FROM YOUR JOURNAL. Write the title of this story in your book. Use the PLOT SUMMARY FLOW CHART to give a plot summary of this story. Note down only the most important parts of the story. [5 mks]  

   12b) Who is the main character of this story? [1 mk]  

   12c) What is the setting of this story? [1 mk]  
   12d) Write captions for any three (3) illustrations or photos from your story. Label your captions with the page numbers of the picture. [2 mks]  

   12e) Draw a Double-Bubble Map [What is this?] comparing you and any major character from your story. Say how you and the character are similar and how you are different from each other. [3 mks]  

   12f) Think of a different ending for your story. Give some reasons you think your ending is a good one and makes sense. [5 mks]

 13) Make four (4) Flippaz cards containing facts from your article (you can refer to other articles from your journal if you struggle to get enough facts from the article you have been using for these questions). [5 mks]  

 14) COLLABORATE: Rehearse and present a play from a journal. You will need to join with other people so the play doesn't have to come from your chosen journal; it can be from another person's journal. The most important parts of your play should be use of space, expression and evidence of rehearsal. [5 mks]  

 15) Memorise a poem from your journal and present it to the class. Use expression, good pace, and a loud, clear voice. Be creative in your presentation. [5 mks]
